Writing a graphic novel?

Wes Molebash, creator of Max vs. Max and You’ll Have That (he also endorsed Best Apocalypse Ever, for which I am eternally grateful), has a great post for those of you thinking about starting (or in the beginning stages of) a graphic novel. It’s a great list, and I think you should read it.

It could also really apply to authors too (except instead of his point about liking to draw insert, “You like to write” because it is still thoroughly applicable. Trust me).

How To Know If You’ve Got What It Takes To Create A Graphic Novel

How to Feel Miserable as an Artist

This is something great I found on Google+:

How to Feel Miserable as an Artist (or, What Not To Do…)

  1. Constantly compare yourself to other artists.
  2. Talk to your family about what you do and expect them to cheer you on.
  3. Base the success of your entire career on one project.
  4. Stick with what you know.
  5. Undervalue your expertise.
  6. Let money dictate what you do.
  7. Bow to societal pressures.
  8. Only do work that your family would love.
  9. Do whatever the client/customer/gallery owner/patron/inventor asks.
  10. Set unachievable/overwhelming goals… to be accomplished by tomorrow.

I’m guilty of a hefty portion of these. Specifically A, E, and F.

What about you?

Something new, something awesome

There comes a point in a blog’s life where it needs to be cleaned out and started over. For Awesomologist, that time is now.

I began thinking of a reboot of my blog while writing this post over at The Underfold, and in the end, I felt like the purpose of my comic was to consume, not to teach/encourage/etc. But, that’s exactly what I’m feeling led to do. I’ve met a lot of really great creators in my three years doing The Underfold, and the one thing that I’ve noticed is that people need community. Continue Reading…

Sticking together

This was originally posted on my comic, The Underfold, but fits better here.

I know there’re a bunch of you out there who also make something. Maybe it’s a comic, maybe it’s just a blog, maybe it’s paintings, or books or maybe you have aspirations to do these things. This post is for you. If you’re not a creator or aspiring creator, this post is still for you because chances are you like what we do. Continue Reading…

Coloring Outside the Lines

If you didn’t know, I work in my church’s nursery with 1-4 year olds.  It is in this nursery that I find one of my biggest issues growing within me whenever we color.

I have this tendency to allow kids to draw… outside of the lines. Continue Reading…
