The Thing About Broken Promises
Let me start out by saying I have a Mac running Snow Leopard and a PC running Windows 7. I like both of them (it’s true).
Mac has been able to push forward pretty well with Windows Vista sucking so much. The problem is… that Windows 7 is actually a good operating system, and maybe their scared, but this ad makes me mad.
Haha, very funny.
But… I have two major issues with this ad.
- Snow Leopard has issues. I know they don’t want to admit that, but since I’ve been on a Mac for a little while now, I’ve been on forums and such looking up information about what I can and can’t do. It turns out that Snow Leopard is actually pissing quite a number of people off. I even found a forum link that said that even if your precious Macbook can support up to 8GB of memory, Snow Leopard doesn’t run stably with anything over 4GB. WHAT? This is the first time I’ve ever hear of an operating system capping the amount of memory it can use, and that is ridiculous.
- Until the iPod, Microsoft didn’t have to talk to Mac about anything. Yeah, this is a clever idea. Going back in time to show how much of a screw up Microsoft has been. The problem? Macintosh sucked until they came out with the iPod. That is the main reason that Mac even made it back out into the open, surfacing from 20 years worth of getting sat on by PC’s customizibility (which Mac still doesn’t have, and is why there’s not as many problems). These conversations wouldn’t even be happening because Mac, for a long time, wasn’t offering anything for the consumer level, or even a professional level until video editing came into the film industry and allowed Final Cut to make it’s mark. But, the only memory that I have about Mac until college was shooting green and black, 4-bit buffalo in Oregon Trail in elementary school.
I’ve never been a big fan of commercials or whatever that show me a lot of the downsides of the opposing side without actually mentioning the benefits of their product. Don’t get me wrong. I love my Macbook. It’s great. But I also love Windows 7 on my PC. They both have their ups and downs.
What do you think?

First, I kinda of like the commercial. I just think it is funny.
Second, Mac might not have been a huge deal prior to the iPod but they had a very solid niche market. They have since been able to expand that market while maintaining the niche base. This is because of a very good marketing department.
Third, Mac OS has always had some problems, but compared to MS it is very stable. This is because of the lack of customizability. Since they have a very limited number of components everything tends to play well together.
Fourth, Pretty much every OS ever has capped memory. In some cases it is capped because of the architecture, but in other cases it was capped because of a lack of foresight. Vista is limited to 4 gig of memory in the 32 bit OS. It is because of the architecture. 32 bits is limits to 4 gig of possible memory assignment (232 = 4,294,967,296)
Finally, I would love Windows 7. Everything I've read makes me want it bad over Vista, even over XP.
I agree. I know about Vista's limitations, believe me, but Windows 7 is so much different. I heart it. It runs faster, even on slower machines because it takes less processing power to work and run and be awesome.
It's so rockin'. Maybe that's why I have such a problem with these new ads. It's just that they've gotten away with making fun of Vista because it actually does have some serious issues, but now that Windows 7 is out, they're trying the same tactic and it just doesn't stand up to the argument.
You should really get Windows 7. It is great.
i hate those ads, but then i hate most ads.
i wish i could afford to buy windows 7. i also wish i could afford to buy a computer worthy of buying windows 7 because there is no point to upgrading my crappy laptop.
also, windows 7 is an incredibly lazy name. i understand that they wanted to get away from the stupid things they had been naming windows the last few years, but come on. couldn't they have at least added a subtitle, like a crappy horror movie?
Windows 7: The Reckoning sounds pretty sweet to me.
It might actually make your laptop run better. One of my IT friends said it worked fine on a computer with 512mb RAM.
And, I think we can call it The Reckoning</> because it really is.
I'm not as techie as you guys. We bought a mac a couple of years ago because it seemed every year our computer would die of a virus. Yes, we used antiviral software. I guess we just have delicate constitutions….
Anyhow, in June, the motherboard (whatever that is) overloaded on the mac, and it cost us $400 dollars and three weeks to repair. I want to stick that mac guy's head in a toilet and flush every time I see the above commercial, because at this point, I'm thinking that they aren't so hot themselves.
