Catchy title, eh?
It really fits me because I am constantly trying to do just that. Generally I fall into a category that many think is completely irrational. Christian. Know what I mean? Sheesh. We Christians just can’t be talked to, can’t be debated with, can’t be wrong, and of course, never mess up. Right?
Well, I’m not here to bash people who think Christians are like that. That would be ridiculous. Frankly, some are like that. Some people are like that without being Christian though.
Everyone can be irrational about something. I know people that are completely irrational about politics. I know people that are irrational about fundamentals of Christianity. I know a guy who will not listen to reason and admit that Spiderman was not, in fact, the greatest movie ever made. And I went to film school with people who couldn’t be talked out of saying the F-bomb every two seconds or so.
It happens to all of us. It’s a matter of opinion. If you like something, you should be allowed to like it. There are somethings that you just can’t talk someone out of, and somethings you can’t talk someone into.
For instance, I can’t talk my wife into liking Kung Pow. She just doesn’t like it. I however, think it is hilarious.
The idea is finding a compromise. I stopped my crusade for Kung Pow watching a long time ago, it didn’t matter how irrational or crazy I thought she was being (and she probably thought the same about me), she just didn’t like it.
I tried to convince one of my friends that U2 sucks. He completely disagrees. I tried to seek a compromise and say that Bono sucks. He still disagreed.
You know what I did? I stopped trying to convince him. I can’t stop him if he likes music that’s terrible. That’s his choice.
I can’t rationalize why I don’t like U2. He’ll never convince me.
But, there are some things that I think people can ease up on. Like I said, the idea is compromise.
There is a significant difference between being irrational about something, but not badgering people about it and being beligerent and refusing to let someone think what they think.
So, that’s what this blog will be about. Things I believe. Things that are irrational, things that aren’t. Things that are absolutely stupid, and things that actually mean something.
