Book Burning: The Tool of Tools
There’s nothing better than burning books to fuel your ignorance and catapult you from “hard reason with” to a complete disregard knowledge, learning, and education. The Nazis employed this technique and Fahrenheit 451 was written about it based on the same idea.
Nothing says, “I don’t understand this” better than calling it “evil” and wanting to burn it. Right, Salem?
A while back, I posted about how much disdain I had for the King James Bible. THIS goes above and beyond because the only thing worse than being ignorant is leading others into a radical tirade that leads to stupidity, hatred, and fear.
How does the video make you feel? Discussion is encouraged.
Good Golly Miss Molly! He does realize that the KJV is a translation from the Hebrew and Greek, right? By his logic, KJV should be burned as well, and we should have to learn Hebrew and Greek in order to read the Bible. Why English at all? Who spoke English when the bible was written? English didn't even exist yet in the form we know it, and the language it developed from was spoken by pagans!
Do I really think ALL bibles written in English should be burned? No. I am just saying that I don't get why KJV is so ordained and all others aren't.
I agree. I can't stand the idea of book burning, but especially not for the reasons they're talking about!
Reminds me of the joke, "If the King James Version was good enough for Jesus, then it should be good enough for me!"
If I remember right, when the Bible was finally put into English (after only being available in Latin), many people back THEN protested its "heresy." And wasn't THAT version the KJV? What goes around comes around, I guess.
True, but what of all the other books? The Billy Graham, the Mother Teresa (of all people), all thrown into the fire because they deemed it "evil". If you look closely at the part about music, they're even throwing out "Goldies"! The Golden Oldies??
Ahhhhh.
I'm sorry to say that I heard this on the local news last night. (I'm from NC.) This makes me angry for so many reasons. But it makes me sad for even more reasons. Why is it that this type of thing is what the world knows "Christians" for instead of for our love?
I agree! We need to make more news for the good things!
It is sad. It's the same way that when a guy like Bill Mahr and Borat and Michael Moore go out to find "religious" people they find ignorantly zealous people to interview, and the other people they find get left on the cutting room floor…
Also, the Latin Bible was only for the priest, not the common folk. KJV is great considering what they had to work with and the pressure the translators were under from the king to finish. The language is beautiful, but some of the translation is problematic. That's where the variety of translations and paraphrases come into play. Each one has a purpose and an audience. But, God speaks through each one!
I have to agree with Brian; the idea of ANY book burning is crazy.
Anytime people go on the news in overalls, I totally take them seriously. And once they use the word "heretic" I'm mesmerized and listen to everything they say.
Yeah, so is the media. People eat this stuff up! It's soooo frustrating, but then again, we've all watched the video now… so maybe we're contributing to the problem?
I will keep that in mind in case I am ever interviewed on the News, Marni.
