God Is

GodisSince college, my adult life has been spent trying  to prove God’s existence.  To myself, to others, it doesn’t matter.  I was trying to prove His existence with my logic and ration.  I’ve always felt that if God really wanted us to understand Himself, then we would be able to prove Him.  Not necessarily scientifically, but to a certain degree prove Him to my liking.

There have been times when I’ve doubted His existence, and it’s always been a circumstance-based reason too.

If God can He will and if he does not then He is not.

I was using my own personal beliefs on what a perfect person would act like and trying to pass God through that filter.  It doesn’t work.  It won’t work.  But, nonetheless, I kept falling back into this mentality every time something went wrong.

My young adult book started a new study based on John Piper’s Don’t Waste Your Life and it has been very interesting.  We’ve only been over the first chapter, and already I feel like God is trying to tell me something.  In Exodus 3:13-14:

Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?”  God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”

Whenever I say, “it is what it is” to my wife she gets frustrated.  Mainly because I said it a lot in a week one time, but still.  But sometimes, that’s the best explanation of what’s going on.  The situation is the situation.  It’s nothing we can change or explain, it just is.

“It is blasphemy to say that there is a higher reality than God to which he must conform in order to be holy. God is the absolute reality beyond which is only more of God. When asked for his name in Exodus 3:14 he said, “I am who I am.” His being and his character are utterly undetermined by anything outside himself.” – John Piper in his sermon, Holy Holy Holy is the Lord of Hosts

Attempts at proving God’s existence haven’t gotten me very far in my faith.  So maybe, instead of trying to prove that He is who He says He is, I just start living like He is.  Let’s face it.

God is who He is.  No matter what we believe.
