Why would a group name themselves ACORN?

This is possibly one of the more ridiculous news stories going around out there. Some “group” called ACORN, which I’m told is an acronym, has been turning in false voter registration cards.

OH NO!

Now, I know that some people are looking at me calling this ridiculous and saying, “He’s just young, he doesn’t understand. This is really SERIOUS.”

Is it though? What is a fake voter going to do? Vote? Nope. He’s going to get a card mailed to his gravesite. Listen, there is a reason that you have to show identification when you go to vote, not just your voter registration. Coincidence? No.

Probably the more ludacris turn in this “story,” or “investigation” or whatever news programs call their junk reports that they run to fill in big gaps in their real news, is that they’re trying to tie it to Obama.

What? You mean a political campaign would fund a group that attempts to get people to register to vote? What a sham! A crock! Democracy is ruined!

How about this for a crazy crock, a 16-year old has started an advertising campaign to get people to sign up to vote for their first time. Not only is he selling t-shirts, but he’s using sexual innuendo to get people to sign up. I believe their slogan is “Never forget your first time” or something equally ridiculous. His campaign is called Virgin Voters. I’m sure his motives are completely on getting people to vote and it probably doesn’t have anything to do with fame and money…

He’s not the only one using the sexual references though. I was watching CNN in the airport and saw a commercial for the First Time Voters something and the song they have being performed by Daughtry (the guy who made it big on American Idol and singing about wishing he could cheat on his soon-to-be wife on their wedding day with his ex…) is Foreigner’s Feels Like the First Time. Which would be great if I didn’t know that song. Because, of course, they’re only playing one line of the song.

“Feels like the first time. Feels like the very first time.” And repeat. That’s what the commercial has in it. But, the actual song is dealing with the fact that the sex is so good with whatever girl he has that it “feels like the first time” everytime.

I don’t know. Maybe I’m just reading into all of this, but all of this signing up to vote thing seems a bit outrageous.

You know how I was convinced to vote? Nope, I did not register to vote when I turned 18. Sorry America. I didn’t see a need to do it. I didn’t think my voice would be heard (I’m still not quite sure), and I didn’t want to waste my time. But, when voting rolled around again… it was 4 years ago.

Bush vs. Kerry. Idiot vs. the Bore.

I was talking to my best friend about politics, making jabs at Bush and all, and my friend stopped me and said, “Listen, you’re not allowed to complain if you didn’t vote.”

At first I was like… “What the…??” But then my sensibility kicked in (which is does occasionally do) and I realized what he was saying. I registered to vote a few days later.

Now, aside from the decisions that you THINK I made based on my previous statements about Bush, registering to vote is important. But, I think that the nation as a whole is doing the younger generations a disservice by starting up all these campaigns with innuendo and pre-seeded politics. Let the mistakes happen.

Best lesson learned is from experience. So, let them not get what they want because they didn’t vote.

What? Let our kids reep what they sow? Or… don’t sow?

Yeah, that’s a different story all together.

So, to recap: ACORN is a stupid name. No matter what it stands for. 16-year olds have no place telling adults to register to vote. Foreigner is amazing. Sex sells everything… Even politics.
